Into The Unknown
Sintra, Portugal
This shot was taken on my journey through Portugal. This well is a place steeped in history and symbolism. As I stood at the top of this spiral descent, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of the stories embedded in its stone walls. Built in the early 20th century, this well wasn’t used for water but instead for mysterious rituals tied to alchemy, mysticism, and the Knights Templar. The well, with its moss-covered stones and echoing chambers, feels like a portal to another time—a descent into something more profound than just earth.
The deeper I looked into the structure, the more I felt a connection to the history and symbolism of this place. The spiral, winding downwards, represents a journey—a symbolic passage from the surface world of light to the inner depths of the soul. Standing there with my camera, I felt like I wasn’t just capturing an image of an architectural wonder, but a piece of creators philosophical beliefs about life, death, and rebirth. The symmetry and moss-draped stonework give the well an ancient, almost otherworldly feel, as if it’s guarding the secrets of time itself.
As I framed the shot, I focused on that spiral, drawing the viewer’s eye downward, inviting them to experience that same descent I felt—a journey into the unknown. The green moss creeping along the stone adds a touch of nature reclaiming the man-made structure, almost as if the well is a living entity. The contrast between the vibrant green and the cold stone feels like the eternal balance of life and death, growth and decay, which the well symbolizes.
The Well wasn’t just built for aesthetic beauty; it was designed to symbolize a journey of initiation, mirroring the structure of Dante’s "Divine Comedy." It begins at the light of the world above, descending into the depths of the earth, only to eventually climb back into the light. This sense of an inward and outward journey makes the well a perfect metaphor for self-discovery, enlightenment, and transformation. Standing there, it felt like capturing this moment was more than just photographing an ancient site; it was about capturing a personal and spiritual experience, immortalizing the feeling of stepping into something larger than life.
Looking at the final image, you’re drawn into that spiral of history, mysticism, and nature’s slow reclamation. For me, this photo isn’t just about the visual beauty of the structure but about its deeper symbolism. It’s about how we all have our own descent to make, our own journeys into the unknown. And just like in the well, it’s not the darkness at the bottom that defines the experience but the climb back up into the light.
