Big Sur, California

Big Sur has always been one of my favorite places to photograph. Its rugged landscapes, the rush of the rivers, and the mystical way the trees arch over the water create a scene that’s both wild and serene. On this particular visit, I was captivated by a spot where the river flowed smoothly between rocks, bordered by trees that seemed to form a natural tunnel.

However, capturing this image was a battle against light and time. The sunlight, filtering through the trees and dancing on the water, made it incredibly challenging to get a good long exposure shot. I needed complete darkness to avoid any light spots in the photo.

As the day faded, and darkness settled, the wilderness around me came alive. The rustling bushes and distant sounds of wild animals were a constant reminder of the untamed beauty of Big Sur. With everything calculated and the scene before me as perfect as it was going to get, I prepared for the shot. Setting my camera for a three-minute exposure, I carefully adjusted the polarizer to eliminate any ambient light.

The result was ‘Azul’. This image embodies the tranquil yet powerful essence of Big Sur’s landscapes. The blue tones of the water and the serene flow captured in the long exposure invite a sense of calm and wonder. Despite the challenges, the wait and the wild surroundings, the final image tells a story of the beauty hidden in the heart of nature’s wilderness.
